Study Region Creation

For earthquake risk assessment and loss estimation at first a study region of our interest need to be prepared. In HAZUS data DVD we can get the data files of different states of US.

Like here I am extracting the data files of CA (California State) to overwrite the data (inside CA folder) to make it compatible of our study region.

We have to change these geodatabases according to the available data of our study region.

Now for the better understanding of the further process I can recommend you to read the following pdf.

*****Do not read the following before reading that pdf tutorial of above link. Otherwise you will not understand anything.

I can suggest you some points

1. No need to calculate POP_RATIO thus you can save a lot of time of learning.

2. You can skip the section "Develop the Landscan Grid" if you find it is difficult. Rather you can make a normal boundary shape file of your study region and make clusters by diving the shape files into pieces  according to building density or population density or landuse pattern whatever you want.

3. No need to use the code for formulating "TractArea" rather you can use "Geometry Calculation" from ArcGIS.

4. Same is true for Lat , Long calculation. You can use Y coordinate and X coordinate respectively from the "Geometry Calculation".

5. Before Lat Long calculation you have to shift hzCounty, hzTract with other shapefiles (like emergency facility, hospital or other which need the lat long property) to the states you are working on. For my case I have move my shapefiles to the California position after deleting the California data from syBoundary file. Better if you make a geodatabase of the files you need to be shifted.

**This point is necessary if your study region falls beyond the boundary limit (Lat Long) of shape file of CA. In this case you can not pick the position of fault Epicenter.

6. After shifting, calculate Lat, Long and project all of your shape files to NAD1983 as HAZUS uses.

7. For projection follow the sequence like :
  •  your shape file projection
  • convert it to WGS84
  • convert it to NAD1983
Do not directly convert from your projection to NAD1983.
